The CRPA traveled to Allen County, Kentucky today to set two tombstones for Veterans.

The first tombstone was for Ephraim Spears. Ephraim was a vet of the War of 1812. He served in the 3rd Regiment of Kentucky Militia. Born in Virginia about 1775 we believe Ephraim had made it to Allen County by about 1810, being one of the earliest pioneers to the area. Ephraim would later give the land to establish the Rough Creek Baptist Church and an accompanying cemetery where he and many of his family are buried.

From there the group traveled about two miles to the Nancy Cemetery. There a tombstone was set for Civil War vet James C. Duke. James was a member of the 52nd Kentucky Infantry, a unit that saw heavy action during the war. One family story has it that James was hung by Confederate symphatizers after the war but that story has not been collaborated. James' wife, Nancy McGuffey, is also buried in the Nancy Cemetery. Nancy was the daughter of Abraham McGuffey. Remember that the Dukes, McGuffeys and Roberts' migrated from Mine Lick Creek, Tennessee to Rough Creek as Union supporters at the beginning of the Civil War.
