Wiseman Herrin

Wiseman is the son of William "Billy" Herren and Mary "Polly" Medley. As everyone knows multiple spellings exist for the Herrin/Herren/Herrons of Mine Lick Creek. I use the Herrin spelling for Wiseman because that is what his military records show. That said, as far as I can tell, his father, Billy, used the Herren spelling. Let us not quibble as we all know the famiy we are talking about.

Multiple dates also exist for his birth. I use the 1900 census date even though his tombstone is different. I do not know where the other dates come from so I use the only first source that I have found.

Wiseman married Elizabeth Emiline supposedly on 11 Apr 1861. At least that is the date used by many on the internet. I cannot find a record of the marriage. Further, some think her maiden name was Dyer while others think it is Thomas. Again, I find no marriage record of either.

They had (best I can determine) nine children between 1863 and 1884. Elizabeth died between the birth of her last child in 1884 and her husband's remarriage in 1895. If her maiden name was Thomas, she is likely buried in the Thomas Cemetery in the 8th district of Putnam County. This is likely as five of her children are buried there.

Wiseman married a second time to Catherine Emeline Jared on 27 Jun 1895. There was no issue from this marriage. Catherine had been married previously to a McDonald. She is buried in the Greenwood Cemetery with McDonald in Knoxville.

We only have one page of his service records which show that he enlisted 21 Oct 1863 at Carthage, Smith County, Tennessee.

Wiseman received an invalid pension and his second wife, Catherine, received a widow's pension for his service.

Wiseman is buried in the Thomas Cemetery in the 8th district of Putnam County, Tennessee. He is in a line with his siblings which seemed to have been buried in line as the date of their deaths would indicate.
