Company H. 1st Tennessee Mounted Infantry, USA

Born: About 1847 in Tennessee (probably Rutherford County)

Company H, 1st Tennessee Mounted Infantry, USA

10 Mar 1864-23 May 1865

William Wade Duke Jr. is the son of William Wade Duke Sr. and Sarah McGuffey. He married Elizabeth Christian but we cannot find the date or location. Elizabeth was the daughter of Benjamin Christian and Nancy Jemima Holland. Wade and Elizabeth had nine children between 1869 and 1890.

Portions of the Duke and McGuffey families, and the Henry Roberts family migrated to Allen County, Kentucky about 1862. They may have traveled as a group for safety but we don't know for sure. It appears that William Wade Jr. did not participate in this migration. Instead, he stayed in Tennessee and joined the 1st Tennessee Mounted Infantry, Union, on 10 Mar 1864. Of course it is possible that he initially went to Kentucky with the family and returned later to join the Union Army.

Wade joined the Union Army on 10 Mar 1864.  He mustered into Company H of the 1st Tennessee Mounted Infantry on 17 May 1864 Carthage, Smith County, Tennessee. He was listed as present for all roll calls from his enlistment until he mustered out in Nashville on 23 May 1865.

Wade left Putnam County, Tennessee sometime after 1910 and moved to Bridgeport, Jackson County, Alabama where he died on 10 Dec 1928. He and his wife are buried in the Rocky Springs Cemetery, in Jackson County, Alabama. Wade's gg gndson, Carl Ray Duke Jr. lives in Silver Point, Putnam County, Tennessee to this day.
