William Harrison Maynard

Tommy Roberts

Company C, 1st Tennessee Mounted Infantry, USA

Born: 1817 in White County, Tennessee

Died: 8 Jul 1895 in DeKalb County, Tennessee

Company C, 1st Tennessee Mounted Infantry, USA

21 Oct 1863-13 Dec 1864

William is the son of John Harrison Maynard and Sarah Caroline Burton. He married a woman by the name of Louisa who was called Eliza. Her surname is debated. Some say Gambrell. Some say Martin. I think her mother was a Gambrell and had Eliza out of wedlock and then later married a Martin whose name Eliza took. William and Eliza had nine children between 1841 and 1858. They finally decided to marry on 31 Jul 1884 in DeKalb County, Tennessee.

William enlisted on 21 Oct 1863 at Carthage in Smith County, Tennessee and was mustered in on 3 Dec 1863 in Nashville. Service records indicate he was present for all roll-calls but nothing else significant in the record until he was mustered out on 13 Dec 1864 in Carthage. His unit was certainly involved in the war and he would have been a part of it. For details review the unit history at https://tngenweb.org/civilwar/1st-tennessee-mounted-infantry-regiment/

William applied for and was approved for an invalid pension on 4 Apr 1883. His widow never applied for a widow's pension so we assume she died before her husband.

William is buried in the Maynard Cemetery in Cherry Hill, DeKalb County, Tennessee. We assume his wife is there also but no marker has been located

Anyone having additional knowledge of William or his wife, or corrections to what I have, please let me know. Your input is welcomed.
