The McCaleb family of Cane Creek was a strong Union supporting family. Samuel Moore McCaleb along with all four of his sons served in the Union Army. William Addison McCaleb, the 2nd of four sons joined Company H on 9 Feb 1864.


William was the son of Samuel Van Ransalear Asiel Silo Moore McCaleb and Elenor "Nellie" Ray. Born on Cane Creek in what is now Putnam County, Tennessee in Dec of 1836, William would marry Malinda "Lindy" Randolph. Lindy was the daughter of Lancaster Randolph and Nancy Elizabeth Rice. William and Lindy had four children from 1858 to 1865.


Although William joined on 9 Feb 1864 in Carthage, Smith County, Tennessee, he was not mustered in until 17 May 1864. He was shown as present at every roll-call until his muster out on 23 May 1865. Nothing significant is noted on any of his roll calls.



William received an invalid pension which he filed for in Sep 1870. His wife would receive a widow's pension after his death.



William and Lindy are buried in the Gentry Cemetery in Putnam County, Tennessee.
