Thomas was the son of Samuel A. Patton and Malinda Byers. Born in Jackson County, now Putnam County, Tennessee 1 Jan 1842. Thomas married Margaret Francis Maxwell about 1867-1868 as their first child was born in 1869. No record of their marriage has been found. Margaret was the oldest child of David Wood Maxwell and Mary Elizabeth Shanks. Thomas and Margaret had six kids from 1869-1881.

Thomas served in both the Confederate and the Union Armies. He joined the Confederate Army fairly early, 7 Sep 1861 at Camp Zollicoffer in Overton County, Tennessee. Camp Zollicoffer was established in the late summer of 1861 as a training and staging ground for middle Tennessee. The unit was at the Battle of Stones River in 1862-1863 where Thomas was wounded by gun shot in the foot on 2 Jan 1863. Thomas was admitted to the Camp Zollicoffer hospital on 10 Jan 1863. It was a "bad" wound to his foot. After admission to the hospital on 10 Jan, he was furloughed home to "Double Springs", Tennessee on 20 Jan 1863 for 30 days. He never returned to the Confederates. Instead, after recovering from his wound, he joined Company L of the 5th Tennessee Cavalry Union Army on 29 Jul 1865. Obviously, the war was pretty much over by then. He was discharged on 14 Aug 1865.

Thomas received an invalid pension in 1880. After his death in 1882, his wife applied for a widow's pension but for some reason, it was denied. I need to do more research on this.

Thomas and Margaret are buried in the Sam Maxwell Cemetery in Baxter, Putnam County, Tennessee.
