Tommy Roberts, 17 Apr 2025

Company C, 1st Tennessee Mounted Infantry, USA

Born: 24 Apr 1831 White (Now Putnam) County, Tennessee

Died: 18 Sep 1899 in Putnam County, Tennessee

Company C, 1st Tennessee Mounted Infantry, USA

21 Oct 1863-13 Dec 1864

Bob is supposed to be the son of a Medlin man and Angeline Herron. Some on the internet claim Britain Medlin is the father. However, several oral history traditions say that it is a brother to Riley Medlin who married Angeline's sister, Elizabeth. This would be a grandson of Britain. In any event, Bob took his mother's maiden name and so is known as a Herren/Herrin/Herron. Bob married Mary Ann Whitefield, daughter of Thomas Logan Whitefield (namesake of Thomas Logan Herren) and Mary Comp. Bob and Mary had seven kids between 1851 and 1868.

Bob's service records show that he enlisted 21 Oct 1863 at Carthage, Smith County, Tennessee, but wasn't mustered in until 3 Dec 1863 in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee. He was present for all roll-calls but records do not give any history of activity between muster-in and muster-out dates. He was mustered out on 13 Dec 1864 in Carthage.

Bob applied for and received an invalid's pension on 2 May 1882. After his death in 1899, his wife, Mary Ann applied for and received a widow's pension on 9 Nov 1899.

Bob and Mary Ann are buried in the Judd Cemetery in the Thomas Community of Putnam County, Tennessee.
