Luther is the son of William Clark and Rachel Carson. He married Susan Whitefield on 16 Jul 1829 in what was then White County, Tennessee. Susan was the daughter of John Tolar Whitefield and Elizabeth Thomas. The Clarks, Whitefields, and Allison families had migrated together about 1829 from North Carolina. Luther and Rachel had nine or ten children (I believe 10) from 1825 to 1849. The first was probably born before they were married. They may (my speculation) have given it up to be raised by Thomas Logan Whitefield, Susan's older brother.
Jacob enlisted in Company C of the 1st Tennessee Mounted Infantry, USA on 21 Oct 1863 in Carthage, Smith County, Tennessee. His neighbor, Joseph R. Allison enlisted on the same day as did Jacob Crockett Barr from the same community. They probably traveled together for safety. Luther was mustered in the same day in Carthage. He was present for all roll-calls with Company C and was mustered out at Carthage on 13 Dec 1864. His complete service record with Company C is attached below.
Almost immediately, after being mustered out of Company C, Luther joined Company D of the 8th Tennessee Mounted Infantry, USA on 1 Jan 1865 at Granville, Smith County, Tennessee and was mustered in at Nashville on 1 Jan 1865. He must have joined at Granville and immediately caught the steam boat to Nashville the same day. He was present for roll-calls until he was given leave to go home in May because of sickness. He died while on leave at home on 20 May 1865 of Typhoid Fever. His record with Company D follows.
After Luther's death, Susan applied for and received a widow's pension. Her application follows.
Luther and Susan are buried in the Allison Cemetery, Putnam County, Tennessee. Some of their kids married and remained locally while others went to Kansas, Arkansas, and Texas.
