Company F & A, 5th Tennessee Cavalry, USA
8 Sep 1862-25 Jun 1865
John is the son of William H. Maynard (also a Union Vet) and Louisa "Eliza" Gambrell. He was married twice. His first marriage was to Elizabeth Catherine Pedigo on 25 Dec 1864 in DeKalb County, Tennessee. Elizabeth is the daughter of Moses Pedigo and Elizabeth Ferrell. John and Elizabeth had eleven children between 1866-1892. Unfortunately, six of them would not survive infancy. Elizabeth died on 5 Feb 1892. John married again four months later, on 16 Jun 1892, to Tennessee Florin Pack. John and Tennessee would have three children between 1895-1898. One of the three died at six months. So, of 14 kids of John, seven died as infants.
John enlisted on 8 Sep 1862 in Nashville and was mustered in on 25 Sep 1862 in Nashville. His service began in Company F, but on 1 Dec 1862 he was transferred to Company A where he remained for the remainder of his service. No explanation is given for the transfer. He was always present for duty during the Company roll-calls except for once being listed as AWOL. The AWOL charge was dropped later as he had been on an authorized "scouting" assignment. Nothing else significant is noted in his roll calls. He was honorably discharged on 25 Jun 1865 at Fayetteville, Lincoln County, Tennessee.
John applied for and was approved for an invalid pension on 22 Apr 1891. His widow, Tennessee, applied for and received a widow's pension after his death in 1912.

John and Tennessee are buried in the Lewisville Cemetery in Lewisville, Jefferson County, Idaho. John's first wife, Elizabeth is buried in the Maynard Cemetery in Silver Point, DeKalb County, Tennessee.
