Company L, 5th Tennessee Cavalry, USA

13 Aug 1863-14 Aug 1865

James is the son of John Harrison Maynard and Sarah Caroline Burton.  He married Elizabeth "Bettie" Medley in 1848. Bettie is the daughter of George Medley and Mary Howell. James and Bettie had four children between 1849 and 1860.

James' service record reveals that after enlistment on 13 Aug 1863 at Carthage, Smith County, Tennessee, he was mustered-in on 29 Dec 1863 in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee He was present for duty during all roll-calls except for a brief "absent without leave" in Dec 1864. He was discharged and mustered out on 14 Aug 1865 in Pulaski, Giles County, Tennessee.

James applied for and received an invalid pension on 5 Aug 1885. After his death, his widow, Bettie, applied for and received a widow's pension on 28 Apr 1888.

James is buried in the Christian Cemetery in Silver Point, Putnam County, Tennessee. We do not know where Bettie is buried but she is probably also in the Christian Cemetery. The Bettie that a lot of people have on the internet and buried in Alabama is NOT our Bettie.
