James is the son of John Mercer Bennett and Susannah E. Webb.  He first married Hannah M. Sandlin on 19 Oct 1857 in DeKalb County, Tennessee and they had seven kids from 1861 to 1881. Hannah's parents were Fuller and Margaret Sandlin. James then married Tennessee Fine Goolsby on 5 Nov 1893 in DeKalb County, Tennessee.  They had three kids from 1894-1902. Tennessee was the daughter of James Martin Goolsby and Sallie Barr.

He was medically discharged for an obscure renal disease on 14 Aug 1863. James obviously did not see any military action.

He applied for and received an invalid pension in 1882. His second wife, Tennessee, drew a widow's pension after his death.

James is buried in the Christian Cemetery in Silver Point, Putnam County, Tennessee. We do not know where Hannah is buried. Tennessee, according to her death certificate, is buried in the Silver Point Cemetery, Silver Point, Putnam County, Tennessee.
