James is the son of John Clinton Boyd and Martha Holladay. He married Rhoda Frances "Fannie" Nichols on 5 Sep 1867. Fannie was the daughter of David Henry Douglas Nichols and Elizabeth Ann Jared. James and Fannie had six kids from 1869 to 1881.

James joined the Confederate services on 8 Jun 1861 at Camp Trousdale, Tennessee. Company muster rolls show him present for duty during each roll-call. He was discharged as a "non-conscript" on 16 Jul 1862.

I can find no records of his service in the USA Army or of POW status.

James is buried in the John Boyd Cemetery in Putnam County. His wife, Fannie, is buried in the James F. Boyd Cemetery in Baxter, Putnam County, Tennessee.
