Company C, 1st Tennessee Mounted Infantry, USA
21 Oct 1863-13 Dec 1864
Jacob is the son of Jonathan W. Barr and Elizabeth Reeves Cronk. He first married Hixey Adeline Martin on 28 Apr 1854 in DeKalb County, Tennessee. We do not know for sure who Hixey's parents were. Jacob and Hixey had 7 children betwseen 1855-1867. Hixey passed away on 10 Feb 1899. Jacob married a second time, on 28 Sep 1900 at Ball Hill, Putnam County, Tennessee, to Nancy Belle Carr. Nancy's parents were Fate Carr and Loduska Elizabeth LaFever. I have not located any children born to Jacob and Nancy.
Jacob enlisted on 21 Oct 1863 in Carthage, Smith County, Tennessee. His neighbor, Joseph R. Allison enlisted on the same day. They probably traveled together for safety. Jacob was mustered in on 3 Dec 1863 in Carthage. Jacob is listed as present on all Company roll-calls until his discharge on 13 Dec 1864 in Carthage. His complete service record is attached below.
Jacob served as Post Master of Burton in Putnam County, Tennessee from 1880 to 1905.
Jacob and Hixey are buried in the Barr Family Graveyard in Burton, Putnam County, Tennessee. This cemetery has been destroyed over the years. It's location is still preserved on Find-A-Grave but there are no tomstones to be found. GPS coordinates are 36.06345, -85.65035. Nancy, Jacob's second wife, is buried with her second husband in the Pleasant View Cemetery in the 8th District of Putnam County.
