Hartwell is the son of Thomas Norton James and Nancy Heath. Hartwell first married Emeline Maynard on 3 Jan 1866 in DeKalb County, Tennessee. Emeline is daughter of William H. Maynard and Eliza Gambrell. Hartwell and Emeline had three children between 1866-1869.  Emeline died sometime between 1870 and 1874. Hartwell married a second time to Sarah T. Buckner on 17 Oct 1874 in DeKalb County, Tennessee. Sarah had been married twice previously, once to a Herron and once to a LaFever. She had one child by LaFever. Hartwell and Sarah also had one child born in 1880.

   

Hartwell enlisted at Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee on 7 Aug 1862 and was mustered in on 9 Sep 1862. He was sick and hospitalized several times in the Nashville and Carthage military hospitals during the following year. He finally, except for a short AWOL in Nov 1864, was consistently present for duty from Jul 1863 until his muster out on 25 Jun 1865 in Fayetteville, Lincoln County, Tennessee.



Hartwell received an invalid pension beginning in Jul 1883 until his death in 1885. His widow, Sarah received a widow's pension from Jul 1886 until her death.



Hartwell and Sarah are buried in the Maynard Cemetery in Cherry Hill, DeKalb County, Tennessee. We do not know where his first wife, Emeline, is buried. Hartwell and Sarah's son, Robert, is also buried in the Maynard Cemetery.
