Company A, 5th Tennessee Cavalry, USA

21 Jul 1862-29 Oct 1863 (KIA)

David is the son of William Travis Barr and Rebecca Jane Mott. Rebecca is the daughter of Mary (Roberts) Mott, sister to Joseph Roberts. David married Julia Caroline Martin on 27 Apr 1862 in Putnam County. Julia is daughter of Thomas Cook Martin and Rebecca Cardwell. David and Julia only had one child, a son, before David was killed by guerillas near Sparta in White County, Tennessee.

David enlisted at Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee on 21 Jul 1862 and was mustered in on 9 Sep 1862. He was immediately listed as absent, sick and being housed in a private home. He remained thus for 30 days when he rejoined his unit. After returning to his unit, he was present with his unit until July-August 1863 when he was listed as on leave. He was killed by guerillas on 29 Oct 1863 near Sparta in White County. Whether he was on leave or present with his unit at this time is unknown.

His widow applied for and received a widow's pension for her and for her minor child.

David is buried in the Grimes Cemetery near Burton, Putnam County, Tennessee. We assume Julia is also buried there but don't have any documentation to prove it. She died of "heart dropsy" on 5 Jun 1911. She did not remarry after David's death. Their son, Thomas David Barr is also buried at the Grimes Cemetery.
