The McCaleb family of Cane Creek was a strong Union supporting family. Samuel Moore McCaleb along with all four of his sons served in the Union Army. David Lindsey McCaleb, 3rd of the four sons joined Company B on 1 Jan 1864.

Lindsey was the son of Samuel Van Ransalear Asiel Silo Moore McCaleb and Elenor "Nellie" Ray, born on Cane Creek in what is now Putnam County, Tennessee on 21 Dec 1838. Lindsey would marry Fannie Elverine "Ev" Shanks on 3 Oct 1858 in Putnam County. Ev was the daughter of William Simon Shanks and Margaret H. Maddux. Lindsey and Ev had eight children from 1860 to 1878. In the 1900 census, Ev is shown as having nine kids with eight living, but we do not know the name of the deceased ninth child.

Although Lindsey joined on 1 Jan 1864 in Carthage, Smith County, Tennessee, he was not mustered in until 22 Mar 1864 in Carthage. He joined as a Private and served as a Private with Company B until he was discharged on 4 Dec 1864 when he was subsequently promoted to 2nd Lt and reassigned to Company K where his father was the Captain of the Company.

Lindsey applied for an invalid pension 20 Jul 1886 but was not awarded a certificate before his death in 1887. His wife would receive a widow's pension after his death.

Lindsey and Ev are buried in the Bloomington Springs Cemetery in Bloomington Springs, Putnam County, Tennessee.
