Probably the 8th District

Company H, 1st Tennessee Mounted Infantry

21 Oct 1863 - 23 May 1865

Capel was the son of Joel Henley and Mary Horne. We do not know who his first wife was or even if he married her, but he had three children prior to marrying Elizabeth Medley on 8 Jan 1840 in Jackson County, Tennessee. We do not know who Elizabeth's parents were. Capel and Elizabeth had seven children from 1843 to 1856.

Capel enlisted on 21 Oct 1863 at Carthage, Smith County, Tennessee and was mustered in on 17 May 1864 at Carthage. Capel was accounted for but absent from his Unit from Aug 1864 for the remainder of the year. He was on "detached" service to Carthage during this period. He was with his unit in Jan and Feb 1865 but was again assigned detached service beginning in March to serve as a nurse in the hospital at Carthage. Given that information, I assume he was nursing during his first detachment as well. He appears to have remained at Carthage as a nurse until he was mustered out at Nashville on 23 May 1865.

I find no evidence of Capel applying for an invalid pension. His wife, Elizabeth did apply for a widow's pension on 10 Mar 1882. I don't know why she waited so long as Capel died in 1879. In any event, she appears to have not been approved for pension. I am currently waiting to receive her pension application from the National Archives to determine more details

Capel is buried in the Thomas Cemetery in the Thomas Community of Putnam County, Tennessee. We do not know where Elizabeth is buried.

As always, I welcome your input if you can correct or add anything to this record.
