Amos was the son of Claiborne Vaughn and Margaret Maxwell. He married Harriet L. Shanks, daughter of William Simon Shanks and Margaret Horton Maddux, about 1850. They had 8-10 kids from 1851 to 1871.
Amos was enlisted into Company C of the 23rd Tennessee Infantry, CSA but was never present for duty. All roll-calls show him as absent without leave. Evidently, he deserted from this unit or never showed up for muster. Then, according to the 1890 Veteran's census, he went to Company C of the 1st Tennessee Mounted Infantry, USA. The difficulty comes in that there is no record of him having been in that Company. He also applied for a pension for that service but the pension was denied. I am awaiting copy of the pension application as of 25 Mar 2025 to see what it says. More research to perform.
Many scores were settled immediately following the war. Amos was allegedly involved in at least one of these. He was indicted, along with others, for first degree murder of Andrew Jackson Maxwell. As far as we can determine, he was never convicted. You can read a more detailed account on the New Stories Tab, "The Killing of Andrew Jackson Maxwell".
Both Amos and Harriet are buried in the Vaughn Cemetery, in Boma, Putnam County, Tennessee.
